Untitled Poem from Our Resident Poet

I am excited today to share with you an untitled poem from the MC's resident poet, Mr. G.o. Horvilleur

  Your thought drifts
like a lone bird in perpetual migration.

We're scattered leaves
in august...
and Whitman has no song for us

a voice, hollow guitar,
off beat and pleading,

the echoes of your thought's screach
reverberates through the autumn's leaves

and the bird is yellow and red and orange
 it drifts alone, waiting, calling

to shed from the sky,
amongst other falling thoughts
at the first sign of winter

-G.o. Horvilleur

Welcome to the ALANA Center!

The ALANA Center (ALANA stands for African, Latin@, Asian Pacific Islander, and Native American) was established in 2004 to fulfill the purpose of uniting communities of color, developing cultural awareness, and celebrating all cultures, both on Pacific's campus and in the community at large.  One point that has come up multiple times is that the center name has no space for those who identify as white; however, white students, faculty, staff, and community members are more than welcome to come hang out in the center.  ALANA is not about putting down white people, but rather elevating those people of color who have been systematically marginalized in American society.

The ALANA Center is the largest physical space within the MC and houses most of the things that people think of when they think of the MC: the ping pong, fooseball, and pool tables, the video game cabinet, and the red couches.  It is open every weekday from 12-10 PM

ALANA is staffed by a group of laid back brown dudes- our supervisor, the lovely Administrative Assistant Marylou Bagus, might even say too laid back.

The ALANA Services Coordinator, Trust Hilton, is ALANA's longest tenured staff member.  He is a junior Psychology and Religious Studies double major.  He is very active on campus as a member and leader in many student organizations, and you can often see him longboarding on campus in a hurry to get to his next meeting.  You can contact Trust at t_hilton@u.pacific.edu

ALANA Center Community Inclusion Coordinator Antonio Calderon is a freshman Engineering Physics major from Stockton.  He has worked closely with Bechtel International Center on his programs to reach out to the international student community.  In his spare time he plays the saxophone.  You can contact him at antoniotheonly@gmail.com

ALANA Center Outreach Coordinator Octavio Rodriguez is a senior English and Spanish double major.  He was also a key player on the Tiger Rugby Team.  You can contact him at o_rodriguez2@u.pacific.edu

And this is yours truly, the MC Affiliate Liaison Jun Sato.  I am a senior English major.  You can contact me at j_sato1@u.pacific.edu

The ALANA Center staff welcomes you!

The class will examine works by Chinese American, East Indian American, Japanese American, Korean American, Filipino American, and Vietnamese American writers.  The class will definitely broaden your perspective on the Asian American experience, something that 33% of Pacific's student body can identify with.

Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Pacific

This March and April is Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the University of the Pacific.  Come check out the many events and programs celebrating various Asian cultures and deconstructing issues that affect the Asian American community.

Students of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage make up 32% of the student body at the University of the Pacific.  These include international and exchange students born in foreign countries, first generation Americans who are the children of immigrants, and students whose families have been in the country for centuries.  In addition to this breadth of different experiences with immigration and identity, many different Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities are represented on campus.  The Asian Pacific Islander community is diverse and vibrant, yet sometimes overlooked.  Media representation of Asian Americans, with all the stereotypes of docility and submissiveness and the pervasive myth of the model minority, has affected not only others' perception of Asian Americans but too often Asian Americans' perception of themselves.  Black History Month was created to celebrate the achievements and contributions of black people and through that celebration to give black youth a more positive self image.  Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month is attempting to do the same.  It is a celebration of our diversity and at the same time a call to action.

APIHM kicks off today, Friday, March 22, with an opening ceremony held at the DUC Ballroom from 4 - 7 PM.  There will be performances from API student organizations, and a set from Bay area R&B band LEGACI.  Afterwards there will be a hAPI hour with organizations tabling and free Asian food!

Check out some Legaci tunes on their Youtube page.

New Ride Share Board at the MC!

Tucked in the corner right behind the water cooler is a new Ride Share Board for the Pacific community!  Many students go back home or on trips for the weekend, and many students commute everyday.  We are hoping to facilitate car pools, road trips, and more with this ride board.  It's very simple and eco friendly- if you are driving somewhere, put a post-it note with your destination, name, and contact info.  If you are hoping to get a ride somewhere, put an orange post-it note with the heading "REQUEST" and your desired destination, name, and contact info.  For example, the orange post-it note currently posted is mine: it says "REQUEST: the beach, Jun, j_sato1@u.pacific.edu".

This is all thanks to the ALANA Center Services Coordinator, Trust Hilton.  Thanks for putting it together, Trust!  Go green, Pacific!

South Korean Consul General Jeong Gwan Lee will be coming to Pacific on Thursday to discuss Escalating Tensions between North and South Korea

Consul General Lee is coming for the the Advancing Women's Leadership Forum with Condoleezza Rice, and the International Program and Services office (IPS) has asked him to stay a little while longer to discuss current affairs in Korea with the Pacific community.  Topics will include the current escalating tension between the North and South after the death of Kim Jong Il and the Korea - US Free Trade Agreement.  With the current media sensationalization of the rise of Kim Jong Un and the escalation of tensions in the region with North Korean missile tests, this is a great opportunity to learn more about what is really happening in this part of the world.
Though this event is open to all, the Consul General would especially like to reach out and talk to international Korean students and students of Korean heritage.  If you are Korean or Korean American, please come!  If you know anyone who is Korean or Korean American, please let them know!

The talk will be this Thursday, March 21, at 2 PM at the Bechtel International Center.  Refreshments will be provided.

Women's History Month at Pacific, Week 2

Women's History Month at Pacific continues with four events planned for the week.

First, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 19, there will be a Student Town Hall with President Eibeck at Grace Covell at 6:30 PM.  President Eibeck is the first woman president of the University of the Pacific!

On Wednesday, March 20, at 8 PM at the MC, Matsuri Japan Club will be putting on the educational program "Way of the Geisha"On Wednesday, March 20, at 8 PM at the MC, Matsuri Japan Club will be putting on the educational program "Way of the Geisha" about the history and culture of Geisha- a term referring to traditional female hostesses- in Japan.  There will be refreshments provided.

Thursday, March 21 is the Advancing Women's Leadership Forum featuring former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, held at Alex Spanos at 9 AM.  Tickets are 25$ and can be picked up at the box office.  Planned in collaboration with high-profile women from throughout San Joaquin County, the forum on Advancing Women's Leadership aims to inspire participants, especially young women, to make a lasting, positive and powerful impact in the communities where they live and work.

Opening the Forum on Advancing Women's Leadership will be Christy Haubegger, founder of the groundbreaking Latina magazine. Now an agent with the Los Angeles-based Creative Artists Agency, Haubegger also serves on the board of Management Leadership for Tomorrow, an organization that works to increase the number of minority MBA candidates at the nation's top business schools.
The forum also will feature a panel of local women leaders who will share their experiences in achieving career and education milestones. They are: Regan Porteous, a current college student and graduate of St. Mary's High School in Stockton; Nikki Lowery, youth pastor and director of women's ministry at First Baptist Church of Stockton; Tori Verber-Salazar, deputy district attorney for San Joaquin County; and the Hon. Connie Callahan, judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Rounding out the week on Friday, March 22, Delta Sigma Theta will be talking about Black Feminism at the Multicultural Center at 6 PM.  Black feminism is a social and political movement borne out of the civil rights era that argues that sexism, class oppression, and racism are all interdependent and that any effort to end one must be an effort to end them all.  It is an example of intersectionality.
Way of the Geisha and Black Feminism are free to attend for all community members, regardless of affiliation with Pacific.

We hope to see you at these events!

Los Liaisones de Affiliados Dicen "Feliz Primavera!" para el País Vasco

The Affiliate Liaisons say "Happy Spring!" from the Basque Country.

From Jun:
In between surf sessions I have had lively conversations with Basque kids about issues of self-determination, the people's sovereignty, American imperialism, Basque autonomy, and the importance of being world citizens (in addition to more mundane things like the weather, the swell, and the relative merits of In N Out and pintxos).

If you are on spring break, I hope it is as fun and multicultural as mine has been.

Agur!

From Joe:
Hello fellow Tigers! I hope you are all having an eventful and relaxing Spring Break; the sun finally came out the mintute Jun arrived, so he definitely brought some of the California Sun with him. I hope to show him more of the Basque Country for the next few days that he is here, so he can take some of the culture and really cool Basque words we are learning back to the US to share with you all! Thank you to all that sent me gifts, cards, food, etc.

Enjoy the rest of your spring break and finish the semester strong ! Hope to see you all at graduation! :)

Work at the MC next year!

Do you want to work at the University of the Pacific Multicultural Center for the 2013-14 academic year?  Come sign up at the front desk or email multiculturalcenter@pacific.edu to receive more information, including the dates of the work info sessions that will be held after spring break.

 This could be you!

I can personally attest that working at the MC has been a rewarding and enriching experience.  Though I have taken a lot more responsibility, that has forced me to grow as a student and a person.  The MC is also a very relaxed atmosphere to work in compared to many other on-campus jobs.  If you have any passion at all for social justice, cultural diversity, and the empowerment of marginalized communities on Pacific's campus and in Stockton, then this is the job for you.  Becoming involved on campus so late is one of my biggest regrets about my time at Pacific, and I hope you don't make the same mistake.

Though Federal Work-Study is preferred, it is not a requirement.  For example, I don't have Work-Study.

Welcome to the Pride Resource Center!

The Pride Resource Center opened in 2003 to provide a safe space for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer/Questioning, Intersexed, and Ally (LGBTQIA) community members at Pacific.  The Pride Resource Center also has a lot of resources for the LGBTQIA community, and is home to the most comfortable couch on Pacific's campus, a state of the art computer with graphic design programs, and several identity flags to symbolize various LGBTQIA communities.

pictured above: said couch, computer, and identity flags
and the rad PRIDE Resource Center staff at their Center meeting

The Pride Resource Center is open from 12-10 PM Monday through Friday, but it remains locked when no one is using it.  To get into the Pride Resource Center, just sign the sign in sheet and ask the staff member at the MC front desk to let you in.  After spring break, the Center will be staffed full time from 12-10 PM by volunteers.  There are still several time slots left to be filled, so if you are interested in volunteering to staff the Pride Resource Center, please contact one of the Pride Resource Center staff:

Devon Guidoux, the Pride Resource Center Program Coordinator and Graduate Assistant at dguidoux@pacific.edu.  Devon is also safe zone trained, and a safe zone trainer.  You can find Devon in the Pride Resource Center between 10 AM and 2 PM Monday through Thursday, or you can always schedule a meeting at some other time.  Devon is fond of talking with their hands and the word "rad".

Macey Harris, the Pride Resource Center Services Coordinator.  Macey is a graphic design major, and as you can see has super rad hair and super rad sunglasses.  You can contact Macey at m_harris12@u.pacific.edu.

Eva Tamsky, the Pride Resource Center Outreach Coordinator.  She is a vocal performance major and just recently put on a program called Sexuality & Spirituality at the MC which discussed the intersection of those two seemingly incompatible concepts.  The program had great turnout.  You can contact Eva at e_tamsky@u.pacific.edu.

The Pride Resource Center has built a strong and vibrant community among the LGBTQIA community at Pacific.  The Center is also on Facebook.  Come hang out sometime and meet the staff and volunteers!

Caribbean Roots

This Thursday, Feb. 28th at 5 PM at Bechtel International Center (near the quads), ALANA Center Community Inclusion Coordinator Antonio Calderon will be hosting Caribbean Roots, a celebration of Caribbean musical culture and history.  There will be music and dancing in the styles of salsa, reggae, reggaeton, bachata, and more.  There will also be free pizza and drinks.

Though this event was not planned by the Black History Month committee, it is still a part of Black History Month.  The rich musical culture of the Caribbean has many influences from African culture, and the brutal history of the Middle Passage indelibly ties the Caribbean to Africa.

If you have any questions or need reasonable accommodations, please email Antonio at a_calderon1@u.pacific.edu, or call the MC at 209 946 7707.

The end of Black History Month: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Nathaniel Mackey

This week marks the end of February and with it the last two events of Black History Month.  Of course, even after the calendar turns to March, we cannot forget or ignore the contributions and accomplishments of black people in history and in today's society.

With that being said, the last two speakers coming to Pacific for Black History Month are both extremely amazing individuals.  First, the NBA's all time leading scorer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be giving a talk about the lessons he learned from being a professional athlete, the things that he has done since he retired from the NBA, and his love of history which inspired his latest book, "What Color is My World? The Lost History of African-American inventors.  Mr. Abdul-Jabbar will be talking at Faye Spanos Concert Hall TONIGHT at 7 PM.  Tickets can be picked up for free at the Box Office near Long Theater until 4 PM.  There will also be tickets available for free at the door, first come first serve, but we expect these to go quickly.

Finally, the poet Nathaniel Mackey will be doing a poetry reading and talking about his work at WPC 140 on Thursday, Feb. 28th at 7 PM.  Mr. Mackey is a professor of English at Duke University and a chancellor at The Academy of American Poets.  He won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2006.  His poetry is inspired by jazz, blues, and the black experience in America.  He is a brilliant poet and writer and his talk will be engaging, educational, and mind blowing.  There will be a reception before the talk at 6:30 PM.

Mandela and Rugby

Mandela and Rugby is an educational program about the relationship between apartheid-a system of racial segregation- and rugby- a sport- in the nation of South Africa.  Nelson Mandela is, of course, one of the national heroes of South Africa, a man who spent close to three decades in prison for his efforts to end apartheid, and was elected to be the nation's first black president in 1994 after longstanding international sanctions finally put an end to apartheid.  This program is being put on by the ALANA Center Outreach Coordinator, Octavio Rodriguez, and will be held in the ALANA Center tomorrow, Tuesday Feb. 26th, at 6:30 PM.

If you have any questions about this event or need accommodations, please email Octavio at o_rodriguez2@u.pacific.edu or call the MC at 209 946 7707.

Welcome to the new MC blog! An Introduction to Multicultural Affairs

Hi all, welcome to the brand spanking new Pacific Multicultural Center (MC) blog!  This will replace the MC weekly but will also be an expansion of the MC's online presence.  On this blog, you will be able to find information about upcoming social justice and cultural diversity events and programs being held at the MC, Pacific, and in Stockton.  I will also be showcasing various MC affiliated student organizations and the three centers which make up the MC as a whole.

For this first post, I will introduce Multicultural Affairs.  The Department of Multicultural Affairs was established in 1995 and is dedicated to the creation and sustainability of a culturally inclusive community across and within the boundaries of culture, sexuality, gender, and other social identities.  Multicultural Affairs offers programs, services, and sponsorships such as cultural heritage month observances, diversity leadership retreats, and intercultural trainings throughout the academic year.  Multicultural Affairs oversees the MC and also advises the United Cultural Council (UCC) student organizations.

The office for Multicultural Affairs is located in McCaffrey Center right around the corner from the MC and across from the Grove and the Center for Student Success.  If you pass by the glass door you will usually see the amazing Marylou Bagus working hard (pictured above).  Also located in this space is the office of this man.

This is Serjio Acevedo, the Director of Multicultural Affairs, Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) qualified administrator, VISIONS Inc. training facilitator, UCC advisor, social justice advocate, and general all around good human being.

The office of Multicultural Affairs oversees the day to day operation of the MC, and is an integral part of keeping the Pacific community diverse and empowered.  If you have any questions about Multicultural Affairs, feel free to stop by MC front desk or the MA office and ask, call the MC at 209 946 7707, or email Serjio at sacevedo@pacific.edu.
