This Tuesday, April 9, at 5 PM at the Tiger Lounge in Grace Covell, the Pride Resource Center's Outreach Coordinator, Eva Tamsky, and Program Coordinator Devon Guidoux will, in conjunction with the Career Resource Center, be hosting the event Out at Work: a panel discussion about being LGBT in the workplace. Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Week 3: Hawaiian Themed
There are two events planned for API Heritage Month this week, and they are both Hawaiian themed!
On Tuesday, April 9 at 7 PM at WPC 140 Japanese American poet Garrett Hongo, who grew up in Hawaii, will be giving a poetry reading. Yours truly, Jun, will be introducing him. Mr. Hongo's poetry draws on his experience growing up in Hawaii and on the historical experience of the Japanese American community.
Shoots den Bruddah! is a lunchtime talk about Hawaii's unofficial pidgin language to be held at 12 PM on Thursday, April 11 at the MC. This event is being put on by ALANA Center Community Inclusion Coordinator Antonio Calderon. There will be free Hawaiian food!

Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month this Weekend
There are several events for Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month planned for this weekend.
The afternoon of Friday, April 5 at the DUC lawn from 1 to 5 PM will be Matsuri Japan Club's Haru Matsuri or Spring Festival.
Simultaneously on the DUC lawn on the same day from 2:30 to 4:30 PM is United Cultural Council's World in a Cup.
Sunday, April 7 from 12 to 4 PM at the DUC is the South Asian Student Association's Holi Color Festival.
Also on Sunday at 6 PM is the Vietnamese Student Association's Culture Show Portrait of the Past held at Faye Spanos. This event is free for Pacific students! Community members can purchase presale tickets for five dollars.

I am excited today to share with you an untitled poem from the MC's resident poet, Mr. G.o. Horvilleur
Your thought drifts
like a lone bird in perpetual migration.
We're scattered leaves
in august...
and Whitman has no song for us
a voice, hollow guitar,
off beat and pleading,
the echoes of your thought's screach
reverberates through the autumn's leaves
and the bird is yellow and red and orange
it drifts alone, waiting, calling
to shed from the sky,
amongst other falling thoughts
at the first sign of winter

Welcome to the ALANA Center!
The ALANA Center (ALANA stands for African, Latin@, Asian Pacific Islander, and Native American) was established in 2004 to fulfill the purpose of uniting communities of color, developing cultural awareness, and celebrating all cultures, both on Pacific's campus and in the community at large. One point that has come up multiple times is that the center name has no space for those who identify as white; however, white students, faculty, staff, and community members are more than welcome to come hang out in the center. ALANA is not about putting down white people, but rather elevating those people of color who have been systematically marginalized in American society.
The ALANA Center is the largest physical space within the MC and houses most of the things that people think of when they think of the MC: the ping pong, fooseball, and pool tables, the video game cabinet, and the red couches. It is open every weekday from 12-10 PM.
ALANA is staffed by a group of laid back brown dudes- our supervisor, the lovely Administrative Assistant Marylou Bagus, might even say too laid back.
The ALANA Services Coordinator, Trust Hilton, is ALANA's longest tenured staff member. He is a junior Psychology and Religious Studies double major. He is very active on campus as a member and leader in many student organizations, and you can often see him longboarding on campus in a hurry to get to his next meeting. He has worked closely with Bechtel International Center on his programs to reach out to the international student community. In his spare time he plays the saxophone. Take Asian American Literature in Fall 2013
Prof. Xiaojing Zhou of the English department and the Ethnic Studies program will be teaching English 161B: Asian American Literature in the fall. This class is only offered once every two years, so don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the rich literary contributions of Asian Americans.

MC Employment Structure for the 2013-14 School Year
The MC employment structure will change somewhat next year. There will be 13 undergraduate staff positions, broken down as follows:
Desk Coordinator (1)
The Desk Coordinator will work closely with the Administrative Assistant to assist with the supervision, recruitment, selection, training, and evaluations of the Desk Assistants. They will coordinate regular 1:1 meetings with the staff, monitor shift schedules, control procedures, and will be responsible for payroll, desk operations, and facilities matters.
This position will hold the most responsibility out of the student employees.
Desk Assistant (6)
Desk Assistants will be responsible for one passive program per semester in addition to their main job duties of staffing the front desk at the MC. They will service students and guests in a courteous manner, will answer the telephone and record messages as directed, maintain the physical space of the MC, check out recreational and educational materials, and will have biweekly 1:1 meetings with the Desk Coordinator.
Inclusion Coordinator (6)
Inclusion Coordinators will be responsible for two active educational or outreach programs per semester to advance the missions of ALANA, Pride, and the WRC. They will also be required to maintain a minimum 2 hour front desk shift per week.
All positions will be required to attend monthly all staff meetings. Desk assistants and inclusion coordinators will be required to attend biweekly training sessions, monthly center meetings, and biweekly 1:1 meetings with supervisors.
